Summary

Barstow Junior High is a public school in Barstow, California, serving grades 5–8, with 646 students in Barstow Unified. The school’s most urgent concern is chronic absenteeism: 65% of students were chronically absent in 2025–2026, compared with 48% districtwide, 18% statewide, 27% at Barstow STEM Academy and 52% at Barstow Intermediate.

Test results were low across all three subjects, and the school lagged the district and state in each. In 2025–2026, proficiency was 7% in English language arts (ELA), 2% in math and 5% in science, versus 18%, 11% and 15% in the district and 49%, 38% and 36% statewide, respectively. Against nearby schools, ELA was the weakest result: 7% compared with 9% at Intermediate and 30% at STEM. Math was also slightly below Intermediate (2% versus 3%) and well below STEM (12%).
