Summary:

Barstow, California, has 14 schools: seven elementary, three middle, three high, and one alternative school, serving students from elementary through high school. In 2025–2026, the average reported proficiency was 18% in English language arts (ELA) and 13% in math, compared with 49% and 38% statewide; the six schools reporting science results averaged 13%, versus 36% statewide. The most important takeaway is that results vary widely from school to school, and even the strongest local results remain below state results.

Barstow High led the all-grades results in all three subjects: 43% in ELA, 28% in math, and 30% in science. It was ahead of the next-highest listed school by 8 points in ELA, 2 in math, and 6 in science. Among elementary schools, Skyline North Elementary led with 35% in ELA and 27% in math; among middle schools, Barstow STEM Academy led in ELA, math, and science, at 30%, 12%, and 24%. At the lower end, Central High (Continuation) had the lowest reported ELA and math results, at 3% and 0%; Barstow Intermediate had the lowest reported science result, at 4%.

Recent changes were mixed: matched-school averages rose by about 1 percentage point in ELA and science, and by less than 1 point in math. ELA moved slightly closer to the state result, while math and science fell farther behind because state results increased more. Skyline North had a 13-point ELA increase, while Cameron Elementary’s math result fell by 9 points; STEM’s ELA fell by 3 points even as its science rose by 3. Context measures do not line up simply with results: in 2024–2025, Skyline North was 74% free/reduced lunch eligible, while Crestline Elementary was 91%; STEM had a student–teacher ratio of 30.2, compared with 20.7 at Barstow Junior High. These figures offer context, not an explanation of school results.
