Summary

Deer Valley High is a large public high school serving approximately 1,800 students in grades 9-12 within the Antioch Unified district, which serves a community with significant economic need.

Academically, Deer Valley is the strongest traditional high school in its district, particularly in English Language Arts where over half of students are proficient, and it shows notable success in supporting English Learners. However, math scores are a persistent challenge across the district, and Deer Valley's proficiency, while higher than at Antioch High, remains below the state average. The school's graduation rate is solid and above the district average, but it faces a serious issue with chronic student absenteeism, which is nearly double the state average and higher than many neighboring schools.

When compared to high schools in the neighboring Liberty Union High district, such as Heritage High, a significant performance gap exists in test scores and graduation rates, despite Deer Valley having similar or higher spending per student. This suggests broader district-level factors are at play. Within its own district, Deer Valley outperforms the other comprehensive high school and the continuation schools (Live Oak High (Continuation) and Bidwell Continuation High), though those serve specialized at-risk populations.

Open Quote They have great pathways at this high school. Kids who are there to learn, and stay focused on their education go far since they learn in very difficult learning environment. They need to stop bussing kids from other areas. No support from the school district and teachers do their best. They have to be super dedicated to the kids working there. Close Quote
