Summary

Allegiance STEAM Academy - Thrive is a K-8 charter school in Chino, CA, serving about 950 students with a specialized focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

The school is performing well, with test scores in English, math, and science that are above the California state average, and it has shown steady improvement in its statewide ranking over the past few years. A major strength is its strong attendance culture, with a chronic absenteeism rate of 12.6% that is much lower than the state average and lower than most nearby schools, including Walnut Avenue Elementary (30.7%). It also operates very efficiently, spending significantly less per student than many surrounding schools in the Chino Valley Unified and Ontario-Montclair districts while achieving solid results.

When compared to other local options, Allegiance STEAM Academy holds its own. It outperforms another local charter, Sycamore Academy of Science and Cultural Arts - Chino Valley, in both academics and attendance. While some traditional schools like Edwin Rhodes Elementary have higher test scores, Allegiance serves a different student population and excels in specific areas, particularly in supporting its low-income students, where it earns a high 4-star rating. The school's STEAM focus seems effective, with science scores that beat the state average, though there is room to improve math performance in the upper grades and support for certain student subgroups.

Open Quote I have some serious issues with how ASA treats students with IEPs or 504 plans who need high support. I advise you to look for another school if you have a child who is Autistic or any other diagnosis that qualifies for an IEP. ASA does not respect the diagnosis or the rights of these students. They try to change their diagnosis to ADHD and force them to cope in the general education setting without proper support. They call this "full integration" but it is really neglect and discrimination.

The Think Tank program is a disaster. It has too many strangers and substitutes who are not qualified or trained to work with these students. The paraprofessionals are eager to learn and help, but they are not given enough hours or resources. The administration is unresponsive and unprofessional. They ignore your emails and phone calls, and sometimes they delegate someone else to call you back.

The only positive thing I can say about ASA is that the teachers and most of the staff are amazing at what they do. They are passionate and caring, and they try their best to provide a quality education for all students.

However, the school is also overcrowded, especially in the middle school. They need a separate campus for the older grades, and privacy away from the younger students.

In conclusion, I do not recommend ASA for students with IEPs or 504 plans who need high support and services. They do not have a proper curriculum that is backed up by research and evidence based or instruction for these students, especially in math. They rely on online materials from TeachersPayTeachers.com instead of research-based and evidence-based curriculum. This is unacceptable and unfair for these students who deserve better.

This school betrayed and failed our son who was enrolled here the first year it opened. He claimed he was mistreated by a staff member who might have physically harmed him, but the administration seemed to have covered it up and we feel allowed the employees to lie. We were not offered any changes or accommodations for his IEP or 504 plan, which made us lose faith in ASA and withdraw our son from the school.
