Summary

Options for Youth-San Juan is a public alternative high school in Carmichael, CA, serving 720 students in grades 7-12 within its own Options for Youth-San Juan District.

The school serves a high-needs population and operates with significantly fewer resources than nearby schools, spending about $5,400 per student compared to over $16,000 at schools like Mira Loma High or Del Campo High. Key challenges include a very low graduation rate (18.5%), a high dropout rate (40.5%), and chronic absenteeism affecting nearly half the students. Academic proficiency in math and English is below state averages, though 11th graders perform better in English than younger students.

As an alternative program, it shows notable strengths in serving specific groups, ranking in the 79th percentile for Special Education students and the 55th for African American students in recent years. Its performance patterns are similar to other alternative schools like La Entrada Continuation High, but it differs greatly from comprehensive high schools in the San Juan Unified district, which have much higher graduation and lower dropout rates.
