Hawaiian Elementary

Summary:

Hawaiian Elementary is a public elementary school in Hawaiian Gardens, California, serving students from kindergarten to 6th grade. With a student population that is predominantly Hispanic (58.36%), the school's academic performance lags behind both district and state averages.

Compared to other schools in the ABC Unified School District, Hawaiian Elementary has lower proficiency rates in English Language Arts (36.31% vs. 64.39% district-wide) and Mathematics (21.26% vs. 51.81% district-wide). This trend is mirrored in nearby schools like Willow Elementary and Furgeson (Venn W.) Elementary, which also serve predominantly Hispanic and economically disadvantaged student populations. In contrast, schools in other districts, such as Clara J. King Elementary in the Cypress Elementary District and Newcomb Academy in the Long Beach Unified District, have more diverse student populations and higher academic achievement.

A concerning trend at Hawaiian Elementary is the significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 2.7% in 2018-2019 to 21.6% in 2022-2023. This, coupled with the high percentage of students (84.64%) qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, suggests that the school and district may need to implement targeted interventions and support systems to address the specific needs of the student population and improve academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is the worst principal that I have encountered. She tries to tell parents what she knows about your child is better than what you know. She also doesn't feel that she needs to do what is required of her as a principal. As far as the school rules are concerned, she does nothing when they are violated. When phone calls are made to the school, the administrative people are poor in relaying the message. If you do not push and advocate for your child, then your child just becomes a dollar sign to them. Would not recommend them at all!!!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
