Summary:

The Tulare County Office of Education has four schools—three high schools and one alternative school—with a combined enrollment of 1,651. Their 2025–2026 results show a sharp contrast: University Preparatory High stands far above the other schools in reported proficiency, while results at La Sierra High, Tulare County Court and Special Education are much lower in several subjects. Because the schools serve different grade spans, all-grades results are not fully like-for-like. The most important finding is that this is not a uniformly high- or low-performing group: University Prep’s results are dramatically higher than the others’.

University Preparatory High leads all reported all-grades subjects, with 92% proficient in English language arts (ELA), 67% in math and 83% in science. The next-highest school, La Sierra High, scored 21% in ELA, 6% in math and 23% in science—about 70, 61 and 60 percentage points behind University Prep, respectively. Tulare County Court and Special Education each reported 0% in ELA and math; Court also reported 0% in science, while Special Education’s science result was suppressed. The 11th-grade comparison likewise puts University Prep ahead: its ELA and math results were 92% and 67%, compared with 27% and 3% at La Sierra and 0% in both subjects at Court.

Recent change is mixed: across the three high schools with results in both years, average ELA proficiency fell 3 points and math fell 6 points from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, while science rose 5 points. SchoolDigger’s rankings echo the contrast: University Prep moved up 59 places to 26th of 2,137, while La Sierra moved down 86 places to 1,754th; Court ranked 2,087th. Ratios and income measures offer context, not explanations: University Prep had the highest student-teacher ratio, 29.5, and the lowest free/reduced lunch eligible share, 38% (2024–2025); Court had the highest share, 96%. Graduation and attendance also differ: University Prep’s graduation rate was 100% and Court’s was 45%, while their chronic absenteeism rates were both about 2%.
