Summary:
Westminster has three middle schools, all serving grades 6–8: Helen Stacey Middle, Willis H. Warner Middle and Dr. Russell I. Johnson Middle. In 2025–2026, their equal-weight average proficiency was 51% in ELA and 40% in mathematics, above state averages of 49% and 38%; the science average was 36%, essentially level with the state. Results vary considerably by school, especially in science: Helen scored 48%, compared with Johnson’s 26%, a 22-point gap.
Helen Stacey led all three schools in every subject, with 58% proficiency in ELA, 48% in mathematics and 48% in science. Its leads over the next-highest school were 5 points in ELA, 4 in mathematics and 15 in science. Johnson was lowest in each subject, at 44% in ELA, 30% in mathematics and 26% in science; those results were 6, 9 and 10 points below state averages, respectively. Warner fell between them, above the state in ELA and mathematics but 3 points below in science. SchoolDigger’s latest rankings also place Helen highest (599 of 2,703, 78th percentile, four stars) and Johnson lowest (1,445, 47th percentile, two stars); Warner ranked 888 (67th percentile, three stars).
Scores declined at all three schools in all subjects from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, while state results rose. The schools’ average fell 4 points in ELA, 5 in mathematics and 2 in science; state results increased by about 0, 1 and 3 points, respectively. One grade-level exception is Johnson’s 7th-grade mathematics, which was 2 points above the state, even though its all-grades result was below. School context also differs: student–teacher ratios in 2024–2025 ranged from 18.0 at Johnson to 24.1 at Helen, while free/reduced lunch eligible figures for 2024–2025 were 90% at Johnson, 87% at Warner and 65% at Helen. These are contextual differences, not explanations for scores. Chronic absenteeism in 2025–2026 was lower than the state’s 18% at each school, but highest at Johnson: 14%, compared with 11% at Helen and Warner.
