Middle Schools in Ukiah Unified

The two middle schools in Ukiah Unified serve grades 6–8 at Pomolita Middle and grades 5–8 at Eagle Peak Middle, with enrollments of 826 and 552. In 2025–2026, both schools were below state proficiency in every reported subject and grade. The most important shared concern is math: the schools averaged 19% proficient, compared with 38% statewide, a 19-point gap.

Eagle Peak stands out in all-grades ELA and science, while Pomolita narrowly leads in math. Eagle Peak had 34% proficient in ELA and 27% in science, compared with Pomolita’s 32% and 22%; Pomolita’s math result was 19.4% versus Eagle Peak’s 19.1%. Grade-level results complicate that picture: Eagle Peak leads grade 7 ELA by 9 points and grade 7 math by 7, while Pomolita leads grade 8 ELA by 2 points and grade 8 math by 4. Eagle Peak’s grade 8 science result, 34%, is the closest of these results to the state’s 35%.

Across the two schools, average ELA proficiency rose by 2 points from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, and science rose by 5; math barely changed, so its gap to the state widened from 18 to 19 points. SchoolDigger ranks Eagle Peak at the 33rd percentile with 2 stars, up from the 26th percentile the prior year; Pomolita is at the 26th percentile with 1 star, unchanged from the prior year. Other differences are worth noting, but do not explain the results: Eagle Peak’s 2025–2026 chronic absenteeism was 25%, versus 19% at Pomolita, while Pomolita’s 2024–2025 student-teacher ratio was 19.1 compared with Eagle Peak’s 20.6. Both schools reported the same low-income measure, free/reduced lunch eligible, for 2024–2025: 83% at Pomolita and 77% at Eagle Peak. Because Eagle Peak serves grade 5 and Pomolita does not, all-grades comparisons reflect different grade spans; families may find same-grade results more useful.
