Summary:

The data cover 13 schools in Sylvan Union Elementary: 10 elementary schools serving K–5 and three middle schools serving grades 6–8. In 2025–26, the schools’ equal-weight average proficiency was 38% in ELA, 33% in math and 27% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38% and 36%. The school averages were lower than the state by 11 points in ELA, 5 in math and 9 in science, but results differed widely from school to school. The most important finding for parents is that a district-wide average hides substantial differences among local schools.

Elizabeth Ustach Middle stands out overall, leading the district in ELA at 53% and math at 46%, and scoring 37% in science—above the state in all three subjects. Daniel J. Savage Middle ranks second in all-grade ELA and math; its grade 6 results are especially strong, exceeding the state by 10 points in ELA and 15 in math. Among elementary schools, Mary Ann Sanders Elementary leads science at 38%, while Crossroads Elementary leads elementary ELA and math and is above the state in math and science. At the lower end, Coleman F. Brown Elementary has the lowest ELA result, 22%—27 points below the state. Woodrow Elementary is lowest in math at 17% and science at 11%, respectively 22 and 25 points below the state. Somerset Middle is lowest among the middle schools in all three subjects.

On average, school results fell from 2024–25 to 2025–26 by 2 points in ELA, 2 in math and 1 in science, while state results rose; the average gaps widened by 2, 3 and 4 points, respectively. Still, six schools improved and seven declined in each subject. SchoolDigger’s statewide ranking percentiles also declined for 9 of 13 schools over three years, while 3 improved and 1 was unchanged. School characteristics offer context, not an explanation: all schools report free/reduced-lunch eligible shares for school year 2024–25, ranging from 50% at Freedom Elementary to 85% at Woodrow; Ustach and Savage have strong results with shares of 56% and 53%. Student-teacher ratios also do not neatly track results: Ustach’s ratio is 20.4, while Sylvan Elementary has a lower ratio of 18.1 but lower results.
