Summary:
The Sunnyvale area list includes 10 schools—eight elementary schools and two middle schools, with no high schools. In 2025–2026, their unweighted average proficiency was 54% in English language arts, 53% in math, and 48% in science, compared with state figures of 49%, 38%, and 36%. The strongest relative subject was math, where seven schools topped the state figure; five did so in each of ELA and science. The most important takeaway is that results vary sharply among schools, including a 58-point math range.
Cherry Chase Elementary led the elementary schools in all three subjects, with 84% in ELA, 88% in math, and 82% in science—about 34, 39, and 38 points above the other nine schools’ averages. Its results were also 35 points above the state in ELA, 50 in math, and 46 in science. At the lower end, Vargas Elementary had the lowest ELA and math results, at 36% and 30%; Lakewood Elementary was lowest in science, at 31%. Among middle schools, Sunnyvale Middle led Columbia Middle by 25 points in ELA, 25 in math, and 27 in science.
Across the 10 schools, average results rose by 2 points in math and 3 in science from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, while ELA was nearly unchanged. Gains were not universal: science fell 7 points at Fairwood Elementary, even as its math result rose 7 points. SchoolDigger ranks Cherry Chase 63rd of 5,804 elementary schools, in the 99th percentile, with five stars; Sunnyvale Middle ranks 328th of 2,703 middle schools, in the 88th percentile, with four stars. The schools’ 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible shares ranged from 7% at Cherry Chase to 43% at Bishop Elementary; these are descriptive context, not explanations of results. Student–teacher ratios also do not neatly track performance: Columbia’s was 16.9, while Ellis Elementary had the highest reported ratio, 21.5. Tested-student counts are not supplied, so results at smaller schools may be less precise.
