Summary:

The 12 schools in Selma Unified include seven elementary schools, one middle school and four high schools. In 2025–26, the 11 schools with reported All Grades scores averaged 34% in ELA, 25% in math and 17% in science, compared with state averages of 49%, 38% and 36%. Science is the clearest area-wide weakness: the local average was 19 percentage points below the state, compared with 16 points in ELA and 14 in math.

James Garfield Elementary leads the elementary schools in all three subjects, with 53% proficient in ELA, 62% in math and 41% in science. Those results put it 8 points above the next-highest elementary school in ELA, 31 points above the next-highest in math, and 15 points above the next-highest in science; SchoolDigger ranks Garfield in the 74th statewide percentile and gives it four stars. At the other end, Terry Elementary has the lowest elementary ELA and math results, at 23% and 15%, while Indianola Elementary is lowest in science, at 10%. Among high schools, Selma High leads Heartland High and Selma Independent in all three 11th-grade subjects, and its 98% graduation rate is above the state’s 88%.

Recent average changes were mixed: ELA fell 3 points and science fell 2, while math rose 3 from 2024–25 to 2025–26; math was also the only subject where the local average gained ground relative to the state. SchoolDigger’s three-year rankings likewise show mixed movement: Garfield rose from the 66th to the 74th percentile, while Abraham Lincoln Middle fell from the 52nd to the 40th percentile. Similar school contexts do not guarantee similar results: in 2024–25, Garfield and Terry enrolled 229 and 224 students, had student–teacher ratios of 21.7 and 24.5, and had 95% and 97% free/reduced lunch eligible, respectively, despite their different achievement results. All Grades results span different grade levels, and STRIVE Academy’s test scores are suppressed.
