Summary

Indianola Elementary is a K–6 school serving 420 students in Selma, in California’s Central Valley. In 2025–26, 29% of students were proficient in English language arts (ELA), 22% in math and 10% in science. These results were below both Selma Unified and California in all three subjects. The central finding is that science was especially weak: the school had the lowest science proficiency among the ten nearby K–6 schools in the comparison.

Compared with nearby schools, ELA was the closest of the three subjects to the local average, but still 7 percentage points lower (29% versus 35%). Math was 8 points below the nearby average (22% versus 29%), and science was 11 points below (10% versus 20%). Against district and state results, math was the school’s relative strength: its 22% proficiency was 5 points below the district and 17 below the state. ELA was 11 points below the district and 20 below the state; science was 10 and 26 points below, respectively. Results also differed by grade: fifth grade had the lowest ELA and math results among all eleven schools compared, while sixth-grade ELA reached 43%, above the district’s 41% but below the state’s 48%.

Results have not kept pace with state gains: since 2022–23, the school’s ELA rate has been nearly flat, while math fell by 8 percentage points and science by 6. Over the same period, its gaps with the state widened in all three subjects. SchoolDigger’s overall ranking fell from the 51st percentile and 3 stars in 2021–22 to the 21st percentile and 1 star in 2025–26. Its 2024–25 student-teacher ratio was 22.9, close to the nearby average of 23.2; 87% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year, compared with a 93% nearby average. SchoolDigger’s subgroup rankings showed a notable contrast: English Language Learner Students ranked at the 73rd percentile in 2023–24, versus the school’s overall 30th percentile, while Special Education Students ranked at the 7th percentile in 2025–26, down from the 81st percentile in 2022–23. These rankings describe the school’s effectiveness for each group. Chronic absenteeism was a positive counterpoint, at 15% in 2025–26 versus 18% districtwide and statewide.
