Summary:

Rowland Unified includes 21 schools—14 elementary, two middle, four high, and one alternative school—serving students across varied grade spans. In 2025–2026, the unweighted school averages were 43% in English language arts (ELA), 35% in math, and 29% in science, compared with state results of 49%, 38%, and 36%. Math was the district schools’ closest subject to the state average, but results differed sharply even among schools serving the same grades.

Shelyn Elementary is the clearest K–6 standout: its ELA, math, and science results were 71%, 68%, and 53%, compared with 20%, 12%, and 8% at Rowland Elementary—gaps of 51, 55, and 45 percentage points. Among K–8 schools, Stanley G. Oswalt Academy led with 70% in ELA, 56% in math, and 57% in science. John A. Rowland High led the high schools with reported scores; Santana High was lowest, at 15% in ELA, 2% in math, and 10% in science. SchoolDigger gives Shelyn an 87th-percentile rank and four stars, and Oswalt an 84th-percentile rank and four stars.

Average results rose from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026 by 1 percentage point in ELA, 3 in math, and 4 in science, although individual schools changed in different directions. For example, Shelyn gained 5 points in ELA, 8 in math, and 19 in science, while Northam Elementary’s science result fell 12 points. The high-school math average remained a concern at 21%, 18 points below the state. For 2024–2025, free or reduced-price lunch eligibility ranged from 57% at Oswalt to 96% at Hurley Elementary; these figures offer context, not an explanation for results. Attendance also differs: Santana’s chronic absenteeism was 76%, versus 16% districtwide and 18% statewide.
