Summary:
The three high schools in Mountain View-Los Altos Union High serve grades 9–12: Mountain View High has 2,187 students, Los Altos High has 2,170, and Alta Vista High has 78. In 2025–2026, the two larger schools were above state proficiency rates in English language arts (ELA), math, and science, while Alta Vista was below the state in all three. The largest takeaway is how much results vary among schools: the highest-to-lowest proficiency gap was 50 points in ELA, 68 in math, and 63 in science.
Mountain View led in every subject, with proficiency of 88% in ELA, 73% in math, and 70% in science; Los Altos followed at 77%, 66%, and 67%. Alta Vista was lowest, at 38% in ELA, 4% in math, and 8% in science. Compared with the state rate for the matching grade, Mountain View was ahead by 31, 41, and 38 points, respectively; Los Altos was ahead by 20, 35, and 34 points, while Alta Vista was behind by 19, 28, and 25 points. SchoolDigger ranked Mountain View 31st, Los Altos 83rd, and Alta Vista 1,589th statewide in 2025–2026.
Recent changes were mixed, rather than consistent across schools and subjects. From 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, Mountain View rose in all three subjects—by 8 points in ELA, 4 in math, and 4 in science. Los Altos gained 10 points in science but fell by 1 in ELA and 2 in math; Alta Vista gained 3 points in ELA and declined by 1 in math and 8 in science. The larger schools have similar student–teacher ratios (18.4 at Mountain View and 18.1 at Los Altos), while Alta Vista’s is 13.7. Their 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible measures were 13% at Mountain View, 17% at Los Altos, and 50% at Alta Vista; these figures describe differences among schools, not what explains their results. Alta Vista’s small enrollment is worth keeping in mind when interpreting its percentages.
