Mill Valley Elementary

The Mill Valley Elementary area has six schools: five elementary schools serving K–5 and one middle school serving grades 6–8. In 2025–2026, the elementary schools averaged 80% proficiency in ELA, 83% in math and 76% in science, compared with California averages of 49%, 38% and 36%. The middle school also scored well above state results in each comparable grade and subject. The most important finding is that all five elementary schools exceeded state results in every reported All Grades subject.

The elementary leaders differ by subject: Park Elementary led ELA at 83%, Tamalpais Valley Elementary led math at 86%, and Edna Maguire Elementary led science at 80%. Each was ahead of the other four elementary schools’ average by 4, 3 and 5 percentage points, respectively. At the bottom, Old Mill Elementary scored 75% in ELA and 78% in math, while Strawberry Point Elementary scored 69% in science. The highest-to-lowest gaps were 8 points in ELA, 8 in math and 10 in science. Mill Valley Middle had All Grades scores of 84% in ELA, 72% in math and 72% in science; its different grade span makes direct comparisons with the elementary schools less useful.

Recent elementary averages fell even as state results rose: from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, the district’s elementary averages dropped 4 points in ELA, 1 in math and 4 in science. Old Mill had a particularly large ELA decline of 14 points, and Park fell 11 points in science. SchoolDigger gives the district five stars and ranks it 22nd of 968; its school rankings also moved in different directions, with Edna Maguire rising from 465th to 144th and Old Mill moving from 143rd to 506th between 2023–2024 and 2025–2026. As context, all six schools reported a free/reduced lunch eligible measure for SY 2024–2025, ranging from 3% to 7%; elementary student–teacher ratios ranged from 19.9 to 21.7, compared with 15.6 at the middle school.
