Summary:

The Mill Valley Middle is the only middle school listed in the Mill Valley Elementary area, serving grades 6–8 and enrolling 721 students. With no other middle schools in this group, there is no school-to-school comparison; the clearest picture comes from state and district comparisons. In 2025–2026, the school’s proficiency was well above California’s in all three reported subjects: 84% in English language arts (ELA), 72% in math, and 72% in science, compared with 49%, 38%, and 36% statewide. Its strongest overall signal is that it outperformed the state across every reported subject, with the largest lead in science.

ELA was the school’s highest-scoring subject, while science had the largest state advantage: the gaps were 35 points in ELA, 34 in math, and 36 in science. But the school was not above its district in every subject: it was 2 points higher in ELA, 6 points lower in math, and 2 points lower in science. Grade-level results also differ by subject: ELA was highest in grade 6 at 87%, while math rose from 69% in grade 6 to 76% in grade 8. Eighth-grade science was 72%, compared with 35% statewide. These patterns suggest that the all-grade results do not tell the whole story, especially for math.

Results changed modestly from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026: ELA rose 2 points and science rose 1, while math fell 2. The average school-to-state gap narrowed from about 36 to 35 points, so the strong state advantage remained but did not grow overall. SchoolDigger gives the school five stars and ranks it 82nd of 2,703 statewide schools, in the 97th percentile; its earlier ranks were 57th of 2,783 in 2023–2024 and 83rd of 2,761 in 2024–2025. The student-teacher ratio was 15.6 in 2024–2025, and 6% of students were free/reduced lunch eligible that year. Chronic absenteeism was 8% in 2025–2026—below the state’s 18% but 3 points above the district’s 5%. Because this list contains just one school and test trends cover only two years, it cannot show peer differences or establish a long-term trend.
