Summary:

The five middle schools in Escondido Union serve grades 6–8. In 2025–26, their average proficiency was 34% in English language arts, 23% in math and 23% in science, compared with state averages of 49%, 38% and 36%. The key takeaway is that results are sharply uneven: Bear Valley Middle was near the state in ELA and math, while the other four schools were considerably farther behind.

Bear Valley led ELA and math, with 49% and 36% proficient—10 and 11 percentage points above the next-highest school in each subject, Rincon Middle. Rincon led science at 30.3%, just 0.6 percentage points ahead of Bear Valley. At the lower end, Hidden Valley Middle had the lowest ELA and math results, at 26% and 16%; Del Dios Academy of Arts and Sciences was lowest in science, at 15%.

Recent changes were mixed: the five-school average fell by 2 percentage points in ELA and 1 in math, while science rose by 3; the gap from the state widened in all three subjects. Bear Valley improved in all three subjects, while Hidden Valley’s ELA result fell by 5 points. SchoolDigger’s 2025–26 statewide rankings put Bear Valley at the 59th percentile and Hidden Valley at the 15th. Context measures do not follow a simple performance pattern: free/reduced lunch eligible shares in 2024–25 ranged from 68% at Bear Valley to 96% at Mission Middle; student-teacher ratios ranged from 17.6 at Del Dios to 19.9 at Mission. These figures offer context, not an explanation for results.
