Summary:
The Escondido Union school list includes 23 schools—18 elementary schools and five middle schools serving grades 6–8—with no high schools; elementary schools have varying grade spans. In fifth grade, the elementary schools averaged 40% in ELA, 30% in math and 28% in science, respectively 10, 7 and 7 points below state results. Middle-school averages were 34% in ELA, 23% in math and 23% in science—15, 16 and 13 points below the state. The most important takeaway is that both groups’ averages were below state results in every subject, despite large differences among schools.
Bernardo Elementary led fifth-grade results in all three subjects, with 76% in ELA, 63% in math and 63% in science—27, 26 and 28 points above the state. At the other end, Orange Glen Elementary scored 13%, 6% and 8%, respectively, below state results by 36, 31 and 28 points. The gap between the highest and lowest fifth-grade schools was 63 points in ELA, 57 in math and 55 in science. Among middle schools, Bear Valley Middle led in ELA and math, scoring 48.9% and 36% compared with state results of 49.3% and 38%; Rincon Middle led in science at 30%, still 6 points below the state. Hidden Valley Middle had the lowest middle-school ELA and math results, 26% and 16%.
Recent changes were mixed: on average, elementary schools’ all-grades ELA and math results fell while science rose; middle-school ELA and math also fell on average, while science rose. State results rose in all three subjects, so the school groups generally did not match the state’s gains in ELA and math. SchoolDigger ranks Bernardo at the 84th statewide percentile and Orange Glen at the 8th; among middle schools, it places Bear Valley at the 59th percentile and Hidden Valley at the 15th. Reported free/reduced lunch eligible figures for 2024–2025 also vary: 26% at Bernardo and 92% at Oak Hill. These figures provide context, not an explanation for school results.
