Middle Schools in Chino Valley Unified

The five middle schools in Chino Valley Unified all serve grades 7–8, making their results a useful same-grade comparison. In 2025–2026, their average proficiency was 58% in English language arts (ELA), 41% in math, and 40% in science, compared with California averages of 49%, 38%, and 36%. The group was ahead of the state in all three subjects, but the most important finding is how widely results vary from school to school: the highest-to-lowest spreads were 36 percentage points in ELA, 50 in math, and 42 in science.

Canyon Hills Junior High led in every subject, with 77% proficiency in ELA, 68% in math, and 65% in science—27, 30, and 29 points above the state, respectively. Robert O. Townsend Junior High ranked second in all three, at 67% in ELA, 59% in math, and 55% in science. At the other end, Ramona Junior High had the lowest results: 41% in ELA, 18% in math, and 23% in science, including math 20 points below the state. Woodcrest Junior High had a mixed profile: its ELA result was 9 points above the state, while math and science were below. Magnolia Junior High was close to the state in ELA but below it in math and science.

From 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, the group’s average rose 3 points in ELA and science, while math fell 1 point. Magnolia and Ramona improved in all three subjects; Woodcrest’s math result dropped 13 points, while Townsend declined in all three. Contextual measures also differ: for 2024–2025, free/reduced lunch eligible shares ranged from 47% at Canyon Hills to 90% at Ramona. Canyon Hills had the largest student–teacher ratio, 26.7, while Woodcrest had the smallest, 17.4; these figures do not establish a cause for achievement differences. SchoolDigger’s 2025–2026 statewide percentile rankings were 94 for Canyon Hills, 88 for Townsend, 59 for Woodcrest, 51 for Magnolia, and 32 for Ramona.
