Summary:

The Northern Humboldt Union High district serves grades 9-12 through four schools in the Arcata and McKinleyville area: two traditional high schools and two smaller continuation schools for students needing alternative paths to graduation.

Among the comprehensive schools, Arcata High stands out as the top academic performer, with test scores well above state averages, while McKinleyville High spends more per student but has lower proficiency rates. Both, however, achieve excellent graduation rates above 97%. The district faces a common challenge with chronic student absenteeism, which is higher than the state average at every school, and math scores are an area for improvement outside of Arcata High.

The two continuation schools show very different outcomes. Pacific Coast High (Continuation) has a perfect 100% graduation rate with no dropouts, demonstrating effective support for at-risk students. In contrast, Mad River High (Continuation) struggles with very high absenteeism and dropout rates. Overall, the district excels at graduating students but has variable academic results and a significant attendance issue to address.
