Humboldt County Office of Education

The five schools in Humboldt County Office of Education serve grades K–12 across three high schools and two alternative schools; enrollment ranges from 9 to 128 students, with 298 overall. Chronic absenteeism is high at most schools: it ranges from 23% at Humboldt County Office of Education Juvenile Hall Court to 95% at Eureka Community, compared with 18% statewide. Most importantly, the three schools with reported all-grades test results average 4% in English, 1% in math, and 2% in science—well below California’s 49%, 38%, and 36%.

Eureka Community leads reported all-grades English results at 7%, 2 percentage points above Arcata Educational Resource Center at 4%; even Eureka is 43 points below the state. Arcata leads in math at 4% and science at 5%, ahead of the other reporting schools, each at 0%, but remains 34 and 31 points below state results. Eel River Community is at 0% in all three subjects. In grade 11, Arcata is also the leader, with 8% in each subject; Eel River has 0% in each.

Results fell between the two supplied years at Eureka and Eel River: Eureka’s English result went from 11% to 7%, and its science result from 16% to 0%; Eel River’s English and science results each went from 5% to 0%, while math stayed at 0%. For these two schools together, the gap from state results widened by about 5 points in English, 1 point in math, and 14 points in science. Staffing figures vary: Eureka has 19.7 students per teacher, compared with 14.5 at Eel River and 12.8 at Arcata, but these figures do not identify one school as strongest in every subject. In 2024–2025, free/reduced lunch eligible was 97% at Eel River and 82% at Arcata; Arcata had higher reported results across all three subjects, a comparison that does not establish a cause.
