Middle Schools in Antelope Elementary

The two middle schools in Antelope Elementary serve grades 6–8 at Berrendos Middle and grades 5–8 at Lassen-Antelope Volcanic Academy (LAVA). The clearest takeaway from 2025–26 results is that neither school leads in every subject: LAVA is ahead in all-grade ELA and science, while Berrendos leads in math.

LAVA stands out in ELA and science, scoring 51% and 38%—about 2 points above the state in each subject—and leading Berrendos by 9 points in both. Berrendos is the math leader at 39%, 6 points above LAVA and about 1 point above the state; its ELA and science scores are 42% and 29%, each about 7 points below the state. Grade-level results add important exceptions: LAVA leads ELA by 17 points in both grades 6 and 7, but Berrendos leads grade 8 ELA by 11 points and grade 8 math by 20 points. All-grade comparisons are not perfectly like-for-like because LAVA includes grade 5 and Berrendos does not.

Average results for the two schools improved from 2024–25 to 2025–26 in ELA and math, bringing them closer to state results, while science moved farther behind: the mean rose 4 points in ELA and 2 in math, but the state gap in science widened from about 1 to 3 points. SchoolDigger rates both schools 3 stars; Berrendos’ percentile fell from 68 to 55 across the three reported years, while LAVA’s rose from 37 to 56. Enrollment and the reported income measure differ: Berrendos has 229 students and LAVA 97, with similar 2024–25 student–teacher ratios of 18.8 and 18.6. In 2024–25, 52% of Berrendos students and 65% of LAVA students were free/reduced lunch eligible; these are contextual differences, not explanations for scores.
