Summary:
Fortuna Elementary has two middle schools: Toddy Thomas Middle, serving grades 5–8, and Fortuna Middle, serving grades 7–8. They enroll nearly the same number of students—233 and 231—but their 2025–2026 results show a clear area-wide academic concern. The two-school average was 20% proficient in mathematics, compared with 38% statewide; the average gaps were smaller in ELA (37% versus 49%) and science (30% versus 36%). Mathematics is the clearest shared academic shortfall from the state.
The schools lead in different subjects, with Fortuna Middle ahead in ELA and mathematics and Toddy Thomas Middle ahead in science. Fortuna scored 44% in ELA, 14 percentage points above Toddy’s 30%, and 22% in mathematics, 4 points above Toddy’s 18%. Toddy led in science, scoring 32% to Fortuna’s 29%, a 3-point advantage. Both schools were below the state in all three subjects. The largest individual gap was Toddy’s mathematics result, 20 points below the state; Fortuna was closest to the state in ELA, 6 points behind.
ELA results improved most: from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, the two-school average rose 3 points and its gap with the state narrowed by 2 points. The average mathematics result rose by less than 1 point while the state improved by 1, and the science gap widened by 2 points. SchoolDigger ranked Fortuna at the 41st percentile in both recent years, up from the 22nd percentile in 2023–2024; Toddy’s latest supplied ranking was the 28th percentile in 2021–2022. Staffing and income measures also differ: student-teacher ratios were 19.8 at Toddy and 13.1 at Fortuna, while 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible shares were 85% and 78%, respectively; these are context, not explanations for scores. Both schools had lower 2025–2026 chronic absenteeism than the state, but higher rates than the district. Because the schools serve different grade spans, their all-grades results are not same-grade comparisons.
