Summary:
Montebello has 13 schools across elementary, middle and high school grades; 12 have reported 2025–26 proficiency results. Across those schools, average proficiency was 36% in English language arts (ELA), 23% in math and 21% in science, compared with California averages of 49%, 38% and 36%. The biggest takeaway is that Montebello’s school averages trail the state in all three subjects, with gaps of 13 percentage points in ELA, 16 in math and 15 in science.
Several schools stand out for particular strengths. Schurr High leads in all-grades ELA at 64%, 15 points above the state and 31 points above the other schools’ average. Applied Technology Center leads science at 38%, above the state’s 36%, and also scores 59% in ELA, though its math result is 13%. Washington Elementary leads math at 40%, with La Merced Academy close behind at 38%. The Academy also tops the three intermediate schools in grade-matched ELA and math results across grades 6–8. At the low end, Vail High (Continuation) has the lowest all-grades results in each subject: 8% ELA, 7% math and 4% science.
Recent changes are mixed: the school-average ELA result rose by about half a point from 2024–25 to 2025–26, while math fell by about half a point and science was nearly unchanged. State math and science results rose, widening Montebello’s gaps in those subjects. Individual changes vary: Applied Technology Center science rose 15 points, while Montebello High math fell 7 points. SchoolDigger’s rankings offer another perspective: Schurr rose to the 67th percentile among high schools, while Greenwood Elementary ranked at the 4th percentile among elementary schools. Similar free/reduced lunch-eligible shares in 2024–25 did not mean similar scores: Wilcox Elementary and Washington were at 77% and 78%, respectively, but Washington scored higher in ELA and math. One school’s test scores are not included because the state suppressed them.
