Summary:

Modesto has 10 high schools: seven comprehensive and two alternative schools serving grades 9–12, plus one charter serving grades 6–12. Among the seven comprehensive schools, average 2025–2026 proficiency was 51% in English language arts (ELA), 25% in math and 28% in science, compared with state averages of 49%, 38% and 36%. The clearest takeaway is that results vary substantially by school, and the group’s average is below the state in math and science.

James C. Enochs High stands out at the top, leading the comprehensive schools in all three subjects with 65% proficiency in ELA, 39% in math and 45% in science. Its results were about 16, 16 and 20 percentage points above the other six schools’ averages, respectively; in math it was essentially level with the state. At the other end, Grace M. Davis High had the lowest results: 37% in ELA, 13% in math and 17% in science—12, 26 and 19 points below state rates. Robert Elliott Alternative Education Center is a distinct case, with 3% ELA, 4% math and 8% science proficiency and 78% chronic absenteeism.

Results improved overall across the eight grade 9–12 schools with two years of results: average proficiency rose about 1 point in ELA, 3 in math and 3 in science from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026. However, the state improved faster in science, so the gap widened. Joseph A. Gregori High had the largest ELA gain, up 14 points, while Fred C. Beyer High fell 6 points in ELA. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile rankings also differ: Gregori rose from 58 to 65, while Davis fell from 42 to 28. As context, the comprehensive schools’ free/reduced lunch eligible rates for 2024–2025 ranged from 46% at Enochs to 84% at Modesto High; these figures describe the schools and do not explain their results.
