Summary:

El Monte, California, has 26 schools: 20 elementary schools, one middle school, and five high schools, serving students across a range of grade levels. The results show a wide spread between schools: elementary and middle school rates span 38 percentage points in English language arts (ELA), 53 in math, and 42 in science; among high schools with results, the spreads are 58, 37, and 43 points, respectively. The most important finding is that a citywide average can hide substantial differences between the schools a family might consider.

Several schools stand out above the state rates. Arroyo High had 68% proficiency in ELA and 45% in science, respectively 19 and 9 points above California; New Lexington Elementary led elementary and middle schools in math at 60%, 22 points above the state. Legore Elementary led that group in ELA at 59% and science at 51%, 10 and 15 points above the state. At the lower end, Miramonte Elementary had 21% ELA, 7% math, and 8% science proficiency. Fernando R. Ledesma Continuation High was lowest among high schools with reported results, at 10% ELA, 2% math, and 1% science.

Elementary and middle school averages improved from 2024–25 to 2025–26: ELA rose 1 percentage point, math 4, and science 6, although individual schools did not all improve. High-school trends were mixed: average ELA and math each edged down, while science rose 16 points, driven largely by gains at Arroyo and El Monte High. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile rose from 53 to 76 for New Lexington from 2023–24 to 2025–26, while Monte Vista Elementary fell from 37 to 22. Income measures are context, not a predictor: in 2024–25, free/reduced lunch eligible rates were 86% at Legore and 92% at Miramonte, despite their very different results. Rio Vista Elementary is another point of comparison, combining 56% ELA and 54% math proficiency with a student-teacher ratio of 15.4. Grade spans vary; Thompson has no test-score figures reported, and El Monte Union High School Community Day’s 2025–26 proficiency figures are suppressed.
