Summary:
Calexico has 11 schools in Calexico Unified: seven elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools, serving students from elementary through high school. In 2025–26, the schools’ average proficiency was 26% in ELA, 16% in math and 12% in science, compared with state averages of 49%, 38% and 36%. The most important finding is that every school’s all-grades result was below the state average in all three subjects.
The leaders vary by subject, and the difference between schools is substantial. Calexico High had the highest all-grades ELA result at 46%, about 21 percentage points above the other schools’ 24% average, but still 4 points below the state. Cesar Chavez Elementary led in math at 26% and science at 23%, about 11 and 12 points above the other schools’ averages. At the low end, Aurora High (Continuation) had 13% ELA proficiency and 0% in math and science. There are grade-level bright spots, too: Blanche Charles Elementary reached 47% in third-grade ELA, 3 points above the state result for that grade.
Recent changes are mixed: the local ELA average was essentially unchanged from 2024–25 to 2025–26, math fell by about 1 percentage point and science rose by about 1, while the gaps to the state widened by about 1, 2 and 3 points, respectively. SchoolDigger’s statewide ranking history also shifted: Enrique Camarena Junior High fell 13 percentile points from 2023–24 to 2025–26, while Dool Elementary rose 5. The reported free/reduced lunch eligible measure for 2024–25 averaged 89% across schools, ranging from 79% at Cesar Chavez to 94% at Rockwood Elementary; this is context, not an explanation for results. Student-teacher ratios also varied, from 21.5 at William Moreno Junior High to 26.0 at Jefferson Elementary.
