Summary

College Station Elementary School is a small, rural school in College Station, AR, serving 150 students from Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the Pulaski County Special School District. The school has experienced a dramatic academic turnaround in the most recent school year, jumping from the 4th percentile statewide to the 27th percentile—a remarkable 23-percentile-point increase that sets it apart from nearby schools with similar demographics.

This improvement is reflected in test scores, with English Language Arts proficiency rising from 13.9% to 32.7% and Mathematics from 10.8% to 30.6% in just one year. The school also stands out for its high per-student spending ($20,953) and very low student-teacher ratio (12.2:1), which suggests a more personalized learning environment. While schools like Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Leadership & Language Magnet Academy and Washington Elementary School spend more per student, they have higher student-teacher ratios (14.9:1 and 16.5:1, respectively), making College Station's low ratio a unique advantage for individualized attention.

Despite this progress, the school's scores remain below district and state averages, and its rank is still in the bottom third of Arkansas elementary schools. The turnaround is encouraging but fragile, as it represents a single year of improvement after years of low performance. Interestingly, Estem Elementary School, a charter school spending only $11,417 per student, achieves higher proficiency rates, highlighting that how money is spent matters more than how much. College Station's success is a beacon of hope among high-poverty peers like Seventh Street Elementary School and Carver Steam Magnet Elementary School, which remain in the bottom 2-7% of the state, making College Station a potential model for best practices in high-needs education.

Open Quote We were deceived to bring our children over to enroll them in the alpha program. If you still look at thier website they still claim to have a foreign language which they do not have one year later. The principle refused to allow my daughter to go to the daddy daughter dance because she turned her form in a day late although I asked the secretary to send one home. She forgot and was going to email me one which I never received. They messed up on my daughter's grades on her interim report giving her an F instead of an A. On one grade they have her a 100/10,000 instead of a 100/100. They did not have a bus route in place for our children there first week of school. When the bus driver is out, expect the bus driver an hour late, and last the bus driver told my son that WW III was going to happen because Trump was president. Which I had to read in his daily journal that he feared for his life. Ridiculous. Worst school. Close Quote
