Summary

Vestavia Hills High School is a top-ranked public high school in Vestavia Hills, AL, serving 1,625 students in grades 10-12 within the highly-rated Vestavia Hills City district, ranked #2 in the state.

This school delivers exceptional academic results that far exceed state averages. On 11th-grade assessments, 74% of students are proficient in math, 78% in science, and 83% in English—roughly three times the state average. The school ranks #4 in Alabama and has stayed in the top 6 for a decade. What truly sets VHHS apart is its success across all student groups: it ranks in the 99th percentile for African American, Special Education, and low-income students, meaning every demographic subgroup performs at elite levels. The graduation rate is an impressive 99%. Compared to nearby Mountain Brook High School, VHHS actually leads in English proficiency (83% vs. 78%), though Mountain Brook edges ahead in math. VHHS also outperforms Homewood High School in every subject while serving a more diverse student population. Notably, VHHS achieves these results while spending less per student ($12,105) than either Mountain Brook ($16,839) or Homewood ($14,426), demonstrating remarkable efficiency.

One interesting finding is the school's chronic absenteeism rate of 12.4%, which is higher than the state average and more than double its own district rate. This likely reflects students missing school for college visits or dual-enrollment programs, and it hasn't impacted academic performance. In fact, English proficiency rebounded dramatically from 56% to 83% in just two years, suggesting targeted curriculum improvements. For parents seeking a school that combines academic excellence with genuine equity across all student populations, Vestavia Hills High School is one of Alabama's strongest choices.

Open Quote As a former FB Player, I can't say enough good things about Coach Buddy Anderson and his staff. They are good men and role models. If I have a son I'd love for him to play for him & his staff. Close Quote

Open Quote I graduated in class of 2009-2010 and in the last 4 years of me being there, the quality of education went into a steep decline. It used to be a pretty decent place to grow and actually learn something but their heads are far too big to not spend all of their money on every shiny new gadget that comes out. The people here are not that nice and the teachers are rather condescending; there are probably only 10 teachers at this institution that are not full of "fluff". It's a pretty fake school.
