Summary

Columbiana Middle School serves 428 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Shelby County district, a highly-rated system where this school sits in the middle of the pack with a consistent 3-star state rating.

The biggest challenge facing the school is chronic absenteeism. In 2024-2025, nearly 1 in 5 students (19.2%) were chronically absent—almost double the district rate of 11% and well above the state average. While this is a major improvement from the 34% rate two years ago, it remains the school's most significant hurdle. This matters because the school actually has favorable resources: a student-teacher ratio of 14.6 is better than nearby Helena Middle (18.2) or Oak Mountain Middle School (18.5), and per-student spending is above average. The issue isn't funding or class size—it's getting students in seats. Academically, math proficiency lags significantly, especially in 6th grade where only 18% of students are proficient versus 44% district-wide. However, English Language Arts is a relative strength, with 8th grade scores (59%) essentially matching the state average. Science is also a hidden gem, with 55% proficiency that beats the state average.

There are encouraging signs worth noting. Special education students have shown strong recent gains, jumping from the 49th to 64th percentile statewide. The school also outperforms Calera Middle, its most demographically similar neighbor, in both 8th grade math (27.9% vs. 21.7%) and English (59% vs. 57.5%). While the school trails more affluent peers like Chelsea Middle School and Oak Mountain by 20-30 points in most subjects, it's performing reasonably given its student population. The clearest path to improvement is tackling attendance—if chronic absenteeism dropped to the district average, the school would likely see meaningful gains across all subjects.

Open Quote This is by far one of the worst schools in the county. The administrators are only interested in teaching to pass state tests and not interested in the education. Many teachers and staff have bullied students and have also told students that they are dumb and that they hate their students. It makes me sick to think anyone would want their children damaged by the staff and their desire to only get a pay check. Please consider your child before putting them in danger at this school.
