Summary

Wilsonville Elementary School is a small, rural school in Wilsonville, AL, serving 229 students in grades PK through 5 as part of the highly regarded Shelby County district, which ranks in the top 30% of Alabama districts.

Wilsonville has a clear strength in early elementary education. In 3rd grade, 65.63% of students are proficient in math and 84.38% are proficient in English—both well above district and state averages. In fact, Wilsonville's 3rd-grade English scores are nearly as high as those at Mt Laurel Elementary, a school with a much lower poverty rate. The school also excels at supporting students from low socio-economic backgrounds, ranking in the top quarter of the state for this group, and has made impressive strides in reducing chronic absenteeism from 15.4% to just 7.5%—far better than the district and state averages. With a favorable student-to-teacher ratio of 14.1:1 and higher per-student spending than many peers, Wilsonville invests heavily in its students.

The most significant concern is a sharp decline in math proficiency as students advance. While 3rd-grade math is a strength, proficiency drops to 44.19% in 4th grade and plummets to 29.17% in 5th grade—well below district averages and even lower than nearby Vincent Elementary (51.79%) and Shelby Elementary (72.22%). This "math slide" suggests a potential issue with curriculum alignment or instructional support as students tackle more complex concepts. The school is on the rebound, improving from a 3-star ranking to 4 stars this year, but solving this upper-grade math decline is key to returning to its former top-50 state ranking.
