Iola Roberts Elementary School in Pell City, AL, serves 402 students in grades K-4 and has become one of the most improved schools in the state, climbing from the 40th percentile to the 83rd percentile in just a few years. This is especially impressive because nearly three-quarters of the student body qualifies for free or reduced lunch, yet the school is achieving results that rival—and often beat—schools serving far fewer economically disadvantaged families.

What really sets Iola Roberts apart is its success with students who are often underserved elsewhere. The school ranks in the top 12% statewide for economically disadvantaged students, and its African American students perform in the top 7% of all Alabama schools—a remarkable achievement. I am a teacher at Iola Roberts Elementary School and I absolutely LOVE teaching there! The teachers and staff provide a loving environment for our students. All decisions are made to benefit the students and provide the best academic opportunities for EVERY child to receive a great education! I love what I get to do by pouring into the lives of students every day and I can't believe that I actually get a paycheck to do something that I love so much!
