Summary

Chisholm Elementary School in Montgomery, AL, serves 493 students in grades K-5 and is part of the Montgomery County School District, which ranks in the bottom 19th percentile statewide.

Chisholm faces significant academic challenges, ranking in the bottom 2% of all Alabama elementary schools. In the 2025-2026 school year, math proficiency rates ranged from just 7% to 8% across grades, which is roughly 3-4 times lower than the district average and 5-6 times lower than the state average. English proficiency was stronger but still low, ranging from 18% to 27%—about half the district average and less than half the state average. When compared to nearby schools, Chisholm sits at or near the bottom in nearly every subject. For example, 5th-grade English proficiency at Chisholm (26.92%) is lower than Highland Avenue Elementary (34.62%) and Morningview Elementary (34.92%). The starkest contrast is with Forest Avenue Elementary, ranked #1 in the state, which achieves 94-100% proficiency in nearly all subjects—a gap of over 85 percentage points in some cases.

Despite these challenges, there are encouraging signs. Chronic absenteeism has dropped dramatically from 39.6% in 2021-2022 to 20.8% in 2024-2025—a 47% reduction in three years—and is now better than the district average. There are also small but real improvements in math and science scores compared to the catastrophic 2023-2024 year, when 4th-grade math proficiency was 0%. The school serves its African American and English Language Learner students relatively better than its overall ranking suggests, with those subgroups performing in the 9th percentile statewide. Chisholm spends about $8,694 per student, which is actually higher than top-performing Forest Avenue ($7,213), indicating that the issue isn't a lack of funding but rather the deep challenges of concentrated poverty—81.5% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. While the school remains in critical condition, the improving attendance and slight academic upticks suggest recent interventions may be starting to take hold.
