The biggest obstacle ahead is attendance. Barrett's chronic absenteeism rate of 26.3% is more than double the state average (12%) and the district average (13.1%), and it actually rose last year even as academics improved. This is a critical issue because missing school makes it harder for any academic gains to stick. For comparison, Christian School, just 2.6 miles away, has a chronic absenteeism rate of only 1.4% and ranks in the 74th percentile overall. However, Barrett's improvement rate is accelerating faster than Christian School's, and it's also outpacing the gains at i3 Academy Phase 1, a nearby charter school serving a similar student population. If Barrett can tackle its attendance challenges and keep up its current trajectory, it could become a genuine success story within the district.

I once felt that Barrett Elementary School had a wonderful staff there to serve the students as well as the public in an educational capacity. I felt that the staff there valued the education of it's students and appreciated the teachers who made up the teaching staff there. However, after a very smart, articulate and dedicated teacher was terminated by a staff member in charge of hiring and termination of other staff because of personal feelings against that teacher, I no longer have respect for principals or any other staff in the Birmingham School System. To ruin an individual's life due to selfish and jealous reasons is something that only God can take control of; and he will do so, and it usually isn't long before He does. Close Quote
