Fairbanks North Star Borough School District

The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District serves about 11,080 students across 30 schools in Interior Alaska, including 17 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 7 high schools, and 2 alternative programs. District-wide proficiency for 2025-2026 is about 43.92 percent in science, 35.85 percent in English language arts, and 33.03 percent in math, slightly above Alaska state averages. Achievement varies dramatically between schools, however, so parents should examine individual school results rather than rely on district averages.

The district's best schools are mostly small charters, magnets, and a military-connected elementary rather than large traditional high schools. Watershed Charter School is the clear standout, with the highest proficiency in all three subjects and the district's only 5-star rating. Anderson Crawford Elementary on Eielson Air Force Base also excels, along with Barnette Magnet School and Chinook Montessori Charter School. Among traditional high schools, West Valley High School is strongest overall, with a 90.9 percent graduation rate and the best ELA scores; Lathrop High School and North Pole High School trail. North Star College reports 100 percent graduation, but as an early-college program serving only grades 11-12, it cannot be fairly compared with comprehensive high schools.

The schools needing the most attention are Hunter Elementary, which combines the district's highest poverty rate with its lowest math proficiency at 16.43 percent, along with North Pole Elementary, Ryan Middle School, Denali Elementary, and Effie Kokrine Charter School. All four middle schools rank below the 50th percentile statewide, pointing to a district-wide weakness at the middle level. Poverty does not tell the whole story, however: Salcha Elementary serves a high-poverty population yet posts solid scores, while North Pole High School has lower poverty but below-average proficiency. Trends also differ by school, with University Park Elementary, Ticasuk Brown Elementary, and Chinook Montessori posting strong gains while Weller Elementary and Ladd Elementary have declined. Families should keep small cohorts and data gaps in mind when reviewing these results.
