Summary

Beacon Hill International School is a public elementary school (grades K-5) serving 348 students in Seattle, Washington, as part of the Seattle School District No. 1.

The school has a distinctive academic profile, with notably strong performance in math that exceeds both state and district averages, while English Language Arts scores are more modest. This pattern of math strength is also seen at other international schools like Dearborn Park International School. Performance tends to improve in the upper grades, suggesting the school's international curriculum model is effective as students progress. However, the school's overall statewide ranking has seen a recent decline, and there is a significant performance gap between male and female students that is larger than typical for the area.

Compared to nearby schools, Beacon Hill achieves its results with lower per-student spending, outperforming several neighbors like Leschi Elementary School and John Muir Elementary School that have higher budgets. It serves a student population with a level of economic need similar to higher-performing schools such as Maple Elementary School, indicating that factors beyond demographics influence outcomes. Notably, school performance varies widely even within close proximity, with Thurgood Marshall Elementary dramatically outperforming most area schools while Kimball Elementary School lags behind.

Open Quote Beacon Hill Elementary is a collaboration of culture, ideas, language, and ideology. This small place of learning serves as a conduit through which parents and children from far flung places come together to create community.... Tentatively and awkwardly, but it does happen. Despite the differences in language, education, residency status, religion...Connections are made child by child. The grown ups tend to follow behind the kids. We, all of us, are learning all the time. Crossing a cultural divide daily is not easy. But at Beacon Hill, the more we practice, the Accidental learning happens often here, when we can find time for it. The poor teachers are so stressed.... I just want to lift their burden a bit so that they can do what they were meant to do and inspire these children to be the best that they are. Close Quote
