Summary

Hawthorne Elementary School is a public Pre-K through 5th grade school in Seattle, serving about 393 students, and it stands out as a consistently high-performing and improving school within its Seattle School District No. 1.

Academically, Hawthorne is strong, with student proficiency in English and Math notably higher than both the district and state averages. Its performance is particularly striking when compared to its closest neighbors, like John Muir Elementary School and Orca K-8 School, which have significantly lower test scores. The school achieves these results efficiently, spending less per student than many nearby schools with lower rankings, such as Graham Hill Elementary School. However, a notable internal trend is a sharp drop in test scores in 5th grade compared to the earlier grades, which is more pronounced here than at other high-performing local schools like Thurgood Marshall Elementary and Maple Elementary School.

While Hawthorne's overall results are impressive, its effectiveness varies for different student groups. The school has shown remarkable recent gains for some student subgroups, while others continue to perform at levels below the school's average. This pattern highlights that the school's successful strategies may not be reaching all students equally. For families, Hawthorne represents a stable, 4-star option in the area, but it is important to consider how the school supports the specific needs of every child.

Open Quote Hawthorne is an amazing school on the rise. The teachers, staff, parents and the wider community are truly embracing this neighborhood school and it shows. The teachers and staff are dedicated to these kids, backed by the district, are getting the kind of professional development that makes a difference. The school offers full time Arts, Technology, and Literacy programs in addition to onsite partnerships with organizations like CDSA and Powerful Schools. All this support and energy devoted to the Hawthorne students makes a difference. Recent test scores have risen significantly and future program development in the school curriculum will only strengthen their learning. For example, my son is in the Spectrum program but needs a little extra boost in his reading skills. The Powerful Readers program gives him that support. But for me personally it's not all about the scores but the facts that my child learns in between the lessons. The knowledge you get from rubbing shoulders with so many diverse cultures can't really be measured but has a value all to it's own. It's those lessons combined with that of the teachers that make Hawthorne so special to me. Close Quote
