Summary

Longfellow Elementary in Houston, TX, is a PK-5 school in the Houston Independent School District (Isd) serving 576 students, and it has undergone a remarkable transformation from a low-performing school to a rising star. After ranking in the bottom 20th percentile for years, Longfellow jumped to the 66th percentile statewide in 2025-2026, earning a 3-star rating. This turnaround is especially impressive given that 85.59% of its students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and the school now ranks in the 85th percentile for serving low socioeconomic status students—a stark contrast to nearby high-performing schools like West University Elementary and Roberts Elementary, which serve much more affluent populations.

Longfellow’s improvement is broad-based, with strong subgroup performance: it ranks in the 82nd percentile for African American students and the 72nd percentile for Hispanic students. However, the school shows a "bimodal" test score profile—4th-grade reading (77.53% proficient) and math (58.43%) are well above district and state averages, while 3rd-grade math (37.8%) and 5th-grade math (36.84%) lag behind. This suggests math instruction is a key area for focus, especially compared to the consistently high scores at nearby Twain Elementary and Horn Elementary.

What makes Longfellow stand out is its role as an "equity champion" in a neighborhood of elite schools. While Red Elementary and Shearn Elementary serve similar high-poverty populations, Shearn struggles in the 5th percentile, highlighting that Longfellow’s success is due to effective leadership and strategies, not just demographics. The school’s student-teacher ratio has improved to 14.2, the lowest among nearby schools, and its per-student spending of $9,730 is used efficiently. For families seeking a diverse, economically integrated school with strong academic growth, Longfellow offers a compelling story of transformation.

Open Quote Longfellow has been a great school! The fine arts, leader in me program and academics are all wonderful. Most importantly we LOVE our teachers! They are fabulous and make learning fun. Ignore the ratings on this site--those are based on standardized test scores and not even up to date ones. Close Quote

Open Quote I like this school. It needs a social worker and hisd needs more resources for autistic and mentally impaired, physically impaired and children with emotional trauma. This school could be so much better if we could invest in behavioral therapists, autism specialists and social workers. Close Quote
