Summary

Athlos Leadership Academy is a public charter elementary school serving 713 students in grades PK-8 in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. The school is part of the Athlos Leadership Academy district, which is ranked 350 out of 446 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Athlos Leadership Academy consistently underperforms the state average on MCA-III assessments in both math and reading across all grade levels. For example, in 2024-2025, only 27.76% of Athlos students were proficient or better in math compared to the state average of 45.21%, and only 37.93% were proficient or better in reading compared to the state average of 49.59%. The school also struggles to serve certain student subgroups effectively, with its ranking for special education students in the bottom 3% of Minnesota elementary schools and its ranking for low socioeconomic status students in the bottom 25% of schools. Additionally, Athlos Leadership Academy has a very high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 64.76% to 80.68% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the nearby schools.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Crest View Elementary, Nasha Shkola Charter School, and Woodland Elementary, generally outperform Athlos Leadership Academy on academic measures, despite serving similar or higher percentages of economically disadvantaged students. This suggests that families in the area may have better educational options available to them, and Athlos Leadership Academy needs to address its challenges in academic performance and serving diverse learners to improve outcomes for its students.

Open Quote My granddaughter goes there and seen to be doing better, then when she went to Brooklyn center high school and she is only in 6th grade. Close Quote

Open Quote There are some outstanding teachers/professionals at the school. But the proof in the pudding is the academic quality and standardized test results generated. Unfortunately, the school is sorely lacking in terms of putting out students who can read/write, do math and other basic knowledge skills. I don't know if that is entirely the schools fault. But as a parent of multiple students in this school, it is my #1 concern. Close Quote

Open Quote Extremely negative place to be around. The systems put in place for student achievement only challenge a few in the middle, and let the high and low students coast. Everyday there are 20-30 students in ISS which is a ridiculous amount and only breeds more negativity. Many great teachers have worked there, but the administration is a joke when it comes to creating an environment of change for students. Nothing will change in this school until the office is cleaned out and new minds with new thoughts are put in place. Great idea for a school, but poor management of this school. Close Quote
