Summary

Westridge Middle in Orlando, FL, is a public school serving 1,136 students in grades 6-8 within the Orange district, where over 60% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school faces significant challenges, most notably a chronic absenteeism rate of 42.9%—the second highest among its immediate peers and dramatically higher than high-performing schools like Howard Middle (17.2%). This absenteeism crisis is strongly linked to the school's consistently low academic performance, with English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency rates hovering around 36-39% across all grades, roughly 20-25 percentage points below district and state averages.

Despite these struggles, Westridge Middle has a standout program in advanced math. In the 2025-2026 school year, an impressive 94% of students taking the Algebra 1 End-of-Course exam were proficient, surpassing the district and state averages (both 63%) and even rivaling top-performing Howard Middle (93%). This "Algebra 1 Paradox" suggests a strong, targeted program for advanced math students, though this success does not extend to the broader student body in standard math or other core subjects like science. The school spends $9,730 per student, which is more than Howard Middle ($9,547) and significantly more than Florida Virtual Middle School ($7,081), indicating that funding alone is not the issue.

Interestingly, Westridge Middle shares a very similar demographic profile and challenges with its closest neighbor, Judson B Walker Middle (2.77 miles away), which has a 63.53% free/reduced lunch rate and a 43.4% chronic absenteeism rate. This suggests the difficulties are systemic to the community rather than unique to the school. While Westridge has shown a slight upward trend in state rankings over the last three years, moving from the 17th to the 18th percentile, it remains in the bottom 20% of Florida middle schools. Addressing the root causes of absenteeism appears to be the most impactful step the school could take to improve its academic standing.
