Summary

Union Park Elementary in Orlando, FL, is a mid-sized school serving 447 students in grades PK-5 within the Orange district, where 63.5% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, reflecting a community with significant economic need.

One of the most encouraging findings about Union Park is its low chronic absenteeism rate of 24.8% (2023-2024), which is notably better than the district average of 35.2% and the state average of 31.4%. This is a bright spot compared to nearby lower-performing schools like Forsyth Woods Elementary (38.3%) and Little River Elementary (37.9%), and even rivals the rate at high-performing Arbor Ridge K-8 (20.6%). However, academic performance remains a challenge. The school ranks in the 29th percentile statewide (1-star rating), significantly below neighbors like Deerwood Elementary (78th percentile) and Waterford Elementary (70th percentile). The biggest concern is in English Language Arts (ELA), where only 44% of 4th graders and 45% of 5th graders are proficient, compared to district averages of 62% and 63%. On a positive note, 5th grade science scores have outperformed both district and state averages for two consecutive years, showing a clear strength.

Union Park spends a substantial $13,273 per student, more than higher-performing schools like Waterford Elementary ($11,780), yet this investment hasn't yet translated into strong academic results. The school's performance has also been volatile, dropping from a 43rd percentile ranking in 2024-2025 back to the 29th percentile in 2025-2026. Interestingly, Lawton Chiles Elementary, just 1.4 miles away with a similar poverty rate (65.2%), significantly outperforms Union Park in most subjects, proving that economic challenges don't have to limit success. With students already showing up consistently, the school has a strong foundation to build upon—the key now is improving instructional quality, especially in reading.

Open Quote I can not say enough about the magnet program at this school. My daughter has learned so much in her first year of school especially Spanish. The staff and principals at this school are also very supportive. It's a very community focused school. Close Quote
