Summary

Little River Elementary is a public school in Orlando, FL, serving 355 students from Pre-K through 5th grade within the Orange district, where over 72% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, indicating a predominantly low-income community.

Little River Elementary is showing signs of a promising turnaround. After several years of low performance, the school achieved its highest state ranking in three years (38th percentile) and earned a 2-star rating for the 2025-2026 school year, a notable improvement from the 1-star ratings of the previous two years. This upward trend is especially visible in 4th-grade English Language Arts (ELA), where 65% of students are now proficient—a rate that actually exceeds both the district (62%) and state (60%) averages. While the school has historically spent more per student ($15,620) than higher-performing neighbors like Deerwood Elementary ($14,318), its academic results are beginning to close the gap. Interestingly, 5th-grade Science has been a consistent strength, with proficiency rates that have exceeded the state average in recent years.

Despite these bright spots, the school faces significant challenges. Chronic absenteeism is a serious concern, with 37.9% of students chronically absent in the 2023-2024 school year—higher than the district (35.2%) and state (31.4%) averages, and notably worse than top-performing neighbors like Deerwood Elementary (21.8%). When compared to the closest alternative, Renaissance Charter School at Chickasaw Trail (just 0.71 miles away), Little River actually provides stronger elementary academic outcomes, such as a 49% proficiency rate in 5th-grade Math versus Renaissance Charter's 30%. This suggests that Little River, despite its hurdles, is building a solid educational foundation for its students.

Open Quote The school seems underemployed. When I drop off my child in the mornings, there is NO teacher present on most days leaving the child to walk alone into the school. Also, at dismissal parents have a green pass with the child's name which is supposed to be taken out prior to pick up, however, most days there are NO teachers walking the children to the cars leaving the children to walk to the cars alone and the majority of the time the ladies outside do not check for the green pass. This school needs to improve their security and have more teacher presence outside the school in the mornings and afternoons. Close Quote
