Summary

Lawton Chiles Elementary is a mid-sized school in Orlando, FL, serving 503 students from Pre-K through 5th grade within the Orange district, where over 65% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school presents a unique profile: it struggles significantly with early literacy and attendance, yet shows remarkable strength in upper-grade math and science, creating a "tale of two schools" under one roof.

The most pressing concern is chronic absenteeism, which affects 33% of students—a rate dramatically higher than nearby schools like Deerwood Elementary (21.8%) and Cypress Springs Elementary (15.3%). This attendance crisis likely drives the school's low 3rd-grade reading proficiency (43%), which is 20 points below the district average. However, students who persist see a dramatic turnaround: 5th-grade math proficiency jumps to 78%, and 5th-grade science consistently outperforms both district and state averages—a bright spot not matched by many higher-ranked neighbors. Interestingly, while Union Park Elementary (just 1.4 miles away) has a similar poverty rate but lower absenteeism, Lawton Chiles actually ranks higher overall, suggesting strong instruction for students who attend regularly.

For parents, this means the school offers a solid academic foundation for upper-grade students, particularly in math and science, but early literacy support and attendance are critical challenges. The school spends $13,693 per student—more than several higher-performing nearby schools like Waterford Elementary ($11,780)—yet results are mixed, pointing to potential resource allocation issues. If your child can overcome the early hurdles and maintain consistent attendance, Lawton Chiles may provide a strong educational experience, especially in the later elementary years.

Open Quote My child is a third grader at Lawton Chiles Elementary. My older children attended this school years ago. I have watched Lawton Chiles decline under the leadership of the new principal. The atmosphere is not friendly and the principal appears to have "favorites" among the teachers. Excellent teachers are leaving due to the current school administration. The principal needs to do more to retain excellent teachers. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter began this school as a 2nd grader and she had attended both Charter, Public and Private school in the past years; However, I am familiar with this school and served as an "emergency contact person" for friends children since 2002. I am a very "involved" parent when it comes to my children's education and I have chosen to keep my child at this school.

In my opinion the Pros are: It appears to me teachers genuinely care, students "look" happy, and overall the staff, teachers, administrators and PTA parents work hard to organize social and educational activities. Also the school is clean, my child has not been the victim of bullying and tells me she likes her "new school."

The Cons: Some activities such as educational workshops/activities, new parent/student K. information are organized before 5pm which is often difficult for working parents to attend and are not as organized as other community public schools that may give parents a school tour or able to access incoming students academically. It also appears not all teachers send home pamphlets or information of events in a timely manner to assist in having parent's be able to work their schedule in order to attend.

Overall I recommend this school and I truly hope everyone works hard considering all the academic changes and benchmark Fl. standards they are placing for the 2013-14 year in order for the students to learn and therefore to obtain a school grade no less than a "B" Close Quote
