Summary

Forsyth Woods Elementary is a mid-sized school in Orlando, FL, serving 507 students in grades PK through 5 within the Orange district, where 72.2% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school currently holds a 1-star rating, ranking in the 20th percentile statewide, which is a slight improvement from the previous year but a significant drop from its performance in the early 2020s when it consistently earned a 2-star rating.

The most critical challenge at Forsyth Woods is extremely high chronic absenteeism, with 38.3% of students missing significant school in the 2023-2024 school year. This rate is nearly double that of nearby Baldwin Park Elementary (18.5%) and far exceeds Brookshire Elementary (22.6%). Academically, the school struggles most in math, where proficiency rates are 20-29 percentage points below the district average. However, there is a notable bright spot in 5th grade science, where 54% of students were proficient in the 2025-2026 school year—a significant improvement from 39% the year prior and much closer to the state average. Interestingly, Cheney Elementary, just 0.9 miles away with a similar demographic profile, outperforms Forsyth Woods in nearly every metric, ranking in the 30th percentile with lower chronic absenteeism (34.2%).

Despite spending $14,863 per student—higher than nearby high-performing schools like Baldwin Park ($12,142) and Brookshire ($14,302)—Forsyth Woods continues to see low academic results, suggesting that challenges are tied more to socio-economic factors like absenteeism than to funding. The school's recent improvements in 4th grade ELA and 5th grade science offer hope for a potential turnaround, and the consistent strength in science suggests there are successful instructional practices that could be replicated in other subjects. For parents, this school offers a dedicated staff working hard to overcome significant barriers, with a clear need for community support to address attendance and boost overall achievement.

Open Quote Poor area, lack of care from teacher and principle. My child went to this school for kindergarten and we pulled him out half way through the school year for a multitude of reasons. As parents we were not impressed. Happy to say my child is much happier and performing much better now! Close Quote
