Summary

Armwood High School in Seffner, FL, is a large public high school serving 2,278 students in grades 9-12 within the Hillsborough school district, a district ranked in the bottom half of Florida.

The most critical challenge facing Armwood is an alarmingly high chronic absenteeism rate of 53%, which is nearly double the state average and directly linked to its below-average academic performance. In core subjects like Algebra 1, only 32% of students are proficient compared to 63% statewide, and 9th-grade ELA proficiency sits at 45% versus 60% statewide. This struggle is not universal across all nearby schools; for instance, Tampa Bay Technical High School, just 4.86 miles away with a similar student population, boasts a 29.2% absenteeism rate and significantly higher test scores, including 76% proficiency in 10th-grade ELA. This stark contrast suggests that Armwood's challenges are not solely due to socioeconomic factors but also to school culture and engagement strategies.

Despite these difficulties, Armwood has a notable bright spot: it consistently outperforms both the district and state in U.S. History, with 77% proficiency in the most recent year. The school also saw a recent graduation rate of 93.5%, though this has been volatile in prior years. With per-student spending ($8,562) in the middle of the pack for its peer group, the school's issues are not primarily about funding. The key to improvement likely lies in addressing the attendance crisis and replicating the successful teaching methods from its U.S. History department across other subjects.

Open Quote I am a parent of 3 children who have graduated or will graduate from Armwood. This school gets a bad rating from many people b/c they base their opinion on the grading system from the state of Florida. What most people do not know is that Armwood missed being a B school by 2 students 3 years ago. Two students from the lower quartile did not increase their level. Two years ago Armwood missed being a B school once again by 1 student for the same reason, and was penalized a letter grade because of this fact. Last year's grade is waiting to come in.
The school has very caring, supportive, and knowledgeable teachers who go above and beyond teaching in the classroom. Many AP courses are taught at the school. I would not send my children anywhere else! Close Quote
