Summary

King High School is a traditional public high school in Tampa, FL, serving 1,154 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Hillsborough district, where over 56% of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The school faces significant challenges, most notably an extremely high chronic absenteeism rate of 50.2% in 2023-2024, which is nearly double the district and state averages and far exceeds nearby schools like Tampa Bay Technical High School (29.2%) and Dr. Kiran C. Patel High School (25.8%). This absenteeism is likely driving persistently low academic proficiency, with only 34% of students proficient in Algebra 1 and 9th-grade English Language Arts, compared to district and state rates around 60%.

King High School's graduation rate has been volatile, dropping from 89.7% in 2020-2021 to a low of 75.1% in 2022-2023 before rebounding to 90.9% in 2024-2025, contrasting sharply with the stable, high rates at Tampa Bay Technical High School (99.1%) and Dr. Kiran C. Patel High School (100%). The school also has a high student-to-teacher ratio of 29.8:1, the highest among nearby traditional high schools like Hillsborough High School (23.2:1) and Middleton High School (24.7:1), which likely makes it harder to support students who are behind.

Despite these challenges, there is a notable bright spot: proficiency in US History reached 73% in 2025-2026, nearly matching the district and state average of 74%, suggesting effective instruction in that subject. Additionally, per-student spending has increased to $12,101, higher than at Tampa Bay Technical High School ($8,918) and Dr. Kiran C. Patel High School ($8,159), indicating that funding alone isn't the issue. The school's primary need is a comprehensive strategy to improve attendance and re-engage students, as this foundational issue affects all other metrics.

Open Quote Horrible. I attended King in the 90s and have seen little improvement in the school since I left. Disengaged faculty and administration, zero effort made to encourage students, a high school run like a prison. Close Quote
