Summary

Tampa Bay Technical High School is a large, comprehensive high school in Tampa, FL, serving over 2,100 students in grades 9-12 and is part of the Hillsborough school district.

This school stands out for its exceptional graduation rate of 99.1%, which is far above the district average of 90.9% and significantly higher than nearby traditional schools like Armwood High School (93.5%) and King High School (90.9%). Tampa Bay Tech also excels in core academic subjects, with 76% of 10th graders proficient in English Language Arts—dramatically outperforming King (45%) and Armwood (52%). In Biology 1, the school achieves an 82% proficiency rate, the highest among its traditional peers and well above the state average. The school has maintained a consistent 4-star rating for a decade, while nearby schools like King have dropped to a 1-star rating, signaling reliable quality. Additionally, its chronic absenteeism rate of 29.2% is much lower than neighbors like Middleton High School (50.3%) and Armwood (53.0%), indicating a more engaged student body.

One area for improvement is Algebra 1 proficiency, where Tampa Bay Tech’s 38% rate lags behind the district average of 63%. However, the school’s technical and career-focused curriculum appears to be a major strength, driving strong performance in subjects like US History (81% proficiency) and Biology. Even when compared to the high-performing Dr. Kiran C. Patel High School, Tampa Bay Tech achieves competitive results in science despite serving a more economically diverse student population (50.48% free/reduced lunch vs. Patel’s 7.2%). This makes Tampa Bay Tech a standout choice for families seeking a stable, high-achieving school with a practical, applied learning environment.

Open Quote I DO NOT recommend anyone to attend Tampa Tech High School!!! The staff does not care about the students’ well being. Since the beginning of the school year my sister and her friends have been bullied in the bus and no one (including the bus driver) did anything about it. The bully makes other students get out of their seats, say awful words and hits them. Also, there are students sitting on the floor on the bus. My mom and I went to the school because we were fed up and wanted to solve this issue. Since my sister got bullied, her grades dropped. The staff in the main office were so rude! The office ladies were standing around gossiping and obviously did not care about anything. We asked to speak to the principal but they called the assistant principal and the office ladies didn’t even told us he was on his way, they just continue gossiping among themselves. The assistant principal told us he will have to suspend everyone including the victims( my sister being one of them). My mom said that was fine as long as the girl whose bullying everyone learns it’s not right to put her hands on others. “Everyone needs to know there’s consequences for their actions” my mom told him. Of course nothing was done! The assistant principal just gave her the bus transportation phone number. My mom asked for the school board phone number but the staff in student affairs acted as if they didn’t know. Luckily a lady gave us the school board number. My mom had to go to the extend of calling higher ups (even higher then the principal) to solve an issue of her daughter being bullied because NO ONE in Tampa Bay Technical High School cares about their students! Open Quote Tech is an awesome school with great academics, dedicated teachers, and generally nice kids. The food tastes terrible, but that's a given (it's a SCHOOL, after all.) I recommend attending it. There is a 93% graduation rate, which is very high for a Title I school. For any school, actually. Close Quote
