Summary

Hyde Park Elementary School in Jacksonville, FL, serves 272 students in grades 3 through 5 and is part of the Duval County Public School District, where over 70% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Hyde Park faces significant challenges, most notably an extremely high chronic absenteeism rate of 53.3% in 2023-2024, which is nearly double the state average and has persisted for five years. This is part of a broader neighborhood crisis, as nearby schools like Ramona Boulevard Elementary School (71.2%) and Wayman Academy Of The Arts (76.9%) have even higher rates. In contrast, high-performing schools like Fishweir Elementary School (22.0%) and Ruth N. Upson Elementary School (44.2%) are located less than 1.5 miles away, highlighting stark differences in educational opportunity within a small geographic area. The school also has the highest student-teacher ratio (20.9) among nearby schools, compared to Bayview Elementary School (14.6) and Pinedale Elementary School (15.0), and spends $11,790 per student, below the peer average of $12,437.

Despite these headwinds, there are signs of potential. A bright spot is 4th-grade math, where proficiency reached 61% in 2025-2026, matching the district average and showing a dramatic improvement from 28% two years prior. However, 5th-grade math is a critical weakness at 28%, the lowest among all nearby schools and far below the state average of 62%. Overall test scores show a recent upward trend, suggesting targeted interventions may be working, but the school remains a 1-star institution. Addressing chronic absenteeism and reducing class sizes will be essential to sustaining progress and closing the gap with its high-performing neighbors.

Open Quote I have 2 children that go to Hyde Park, On several occasions they have been in a fight(none they have started) the principal basically turned her back on the problem. In my opinion the teachers and principal are scared of the kids that go to this school. The Office staff is the rudest bunch of people I have ever met, they can't even answer any question nor do they seem to try and find out. In my honest opinion they need to just shut this school down or at least get some people in there that will care and run it like a school should be ran. At this point in time if you are thinking about this school just turn around and run away now as fast as you can Close Quote
