Summary

John C. Daniels is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the New Haven School District in Connecticut, with 513 students. Despite consistent funding and a relatively low student-teacher ratio, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Connecticut elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, John C. Daniels underperforms the district and state averages across all grade levels and subjects, particularly in mathematics and science. For example, in 2024-2025, only 19.2% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 17.1% for the district and 46.9% for the state. The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 20% to 37.5% over the past few years, significantly higher than the state average.

Interestingly, the nearby magnet schools, such as Barnard Environmental Magnet School and Conte/West Hills Magnet School, as well as the traditional public school Edgewood School, generally outperform John C. Daniels in academic achievement, despite serving similar high-needs student populations. The lack of academic progress and persistent achievement gaps at John C. Daniels suggest the need for targeted interventions to improve student outcomes.

Open Quote When we moved to New Haven to teach at Yale, we chose to send our kids to a public school, but NOT Worthington Hooker. John C Daniels is a Spanish- English dual language school, and so far we have been very pleased with it. My children come from an award winning, nationally recognized dual language school in the DC area, and I have to say they are happier and learning Spanish more efficiently at JCD than they did at their previous school. In addition to Spanish, the kids have an opportunity to take advantage of JCD's excellent music program.

Is JCD perfect? Of course not. But the teachers are committed and competent, the principal is a nationally recognized administrator, and more and more parents are getting involved in the school. I look forward to seeing Daniels garner more and more attention in the community for the success and well being of its students. Close Quote
